| | [none] | ] | Last Sunday my second child became a husband. He asked me to share whatever was on my heart during the ceremony so I wrote out the following.
A virtuous woman, who can find? Her husband has full confidence in her. She laughs at the days to come. And much, much more. You, Joseph, have been exceedingly blessed by the LORD. Keep that in mind for the rest of your life. You will need to.
You've read the katuba. But what is “responsibility?” Wiki says this:
Moral responsibility can refer to two different but related things. First, a person has moral responsibility for a situation if that person has an obligation [or duty] to ensure that something happens. People who have moral responsibility for an action are usually called moral agents Agents are creatures that are capable of reflecting on their situation, forming intentions about how they will act, and then carrying out that action.
Moral responsibility is both related to and different from causal responsibility and legal responsibility. People are causally responsible for events when those events are directly brought about by their actions. Often when people have moral responsibility for a situation, they also have causal responsibility for that situation. Someone who is praised for acting in a morally responsible way has usually caused some good state of affairs to occur. A person is legally responsible for his or her actions when it is that person who will be penalised in the court system for an event that has occurred.
You have been walking in all three types of responsibility for yourself. Now you are graduating to responsibility for people other than yourself. It is time to look at the converse of responsibility.
Wiki, again (and amazingly), is helpful in understanding authority:
Max Weber, in his sociological work, identified and distinguished three types of legitimate domination (or rule), that have sometimes been rendered in English translation as types of authority, because domination isn't seen as a political concept in the first place. Weber defined domination (authority) as the chance of commands being obeyed by a specifiable group of people. Legitimate authority is that which is recognized as legitimate and justified by both the ruler and the ruled.
Weber divided legitimate authority into three types, and as a new head of family, you should be interested in what he termed charismatic authority:
Here, the charisma of the individual or the leader plays an important role. Charismatic authority is that authority which is derived from "the gift of grace" or when the leader claims that his authority is derived from a "higher power" (e.g. God or natural law or rights) or "inspiration", that is superior to both the validity of traditional and rational-legal authority and followers accept this and are willing to follow this higher or inspired authority, in the place of the authority that they have hitherto been following.
What distinguishes authority from coercion, force and power on the one hand and leadership, persuasion and influence on the other hand is legitimacy.
I warn you now, your perception of your legitimacy to be the authority in your household may not always be congruent with your wife's perception.
How, then, are you to handle those situations when they arise? Clearly, what I call “The Darth Vader School of Management Theory” is out. What you will need is the other hand of leadership, persuasion, and influence. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about them. But remember the Fruit of The Spirit: love, joy or cheerfulness, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. “Let your gentleness be evident to all.” How much more should it be evident to your own family? As the head, you have the obligation to demonstrate to your family how this is done.
And how is this done? It's very simple, but it's not always easy: you must be dead to self at all times. No pity parties, No thinking, “But I want...” or “I have a right to...” No, it must be what the LORD wants at all times, and generally, that is you showing your family what it means to be a disciple of the Messiah. You could start by washing Simone's poor tired feet tonight.
May the LORD God bless you even more exceedingly abundantly!

| | [none] | ] | From http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/04/30/ownership/ on April 30:
Sen. Dick Durbin, on a local Chicago radio station this week, blurted out an obvious truth about Congress that, despite being blindingly obvious, is rarely spoken: "And the banks — hard to believe in a time when we’re facing a banking crisis that many of the banks created — are still the most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. And they frankly own the place."
One might think it would be a big news story for the second most-powerful member of the U.S. Senate to baldly state that the Congress is "owned" by the bankers who spawned the financial crisis and continue to dictate the government's actions. But it won't be. The leading members of the media work for the very corporations that benefit most from this process. Establishment journalists are integral and well-rewarded members of the same system and thus cannot and will not see it as inherently corrupt (instead, as Newsweek's Evan Thomas said, their role, as "members of the ruling class," is to "prop up the existing order," "protect traditional institutions" and "safeguard the status quo").
So if you haven't seen this piece of news, now you know why.
I was thinking, maybe Durbin said this because he, too, is trying to get We, the Sheeple, to take action against the Oligarchy. Or maybe they want to see just how effectively the Internet disseminates such news, and what its impact is. Probably, however, they are firmly convinced they are completely unassailable now and just want to prove it to the non-sheep before they drop the axe on them and isolate them from their sources, one way or another. |

| | "Gloria, 2nd Movement" by John Rutter, performed by the Cambridge Singers | ] | An impartial review of the concept of torture in the Scriptures makes it clear it is not forbidden and in certain cases encouraged. But such a review is incomplete.
Consider how Yeshua was led by the Spirit in the case of the woman caught in adultery. The religious leaders saw an opportunity to trap Him, for Moses was very clear: her punishment was to be stoned to death. They must have had some reason to think He would not support that. Why?
He knew the Law--He IS the Law. Yet this woman was spared via a moment of wisdom that made Solomon look like a pretty dim bulb. Why?
Likewise, the religious leaders must have had reason to think Yeshua could be trapped on the subject of divorce. Why?
Here, too, He made it clear there were serious misunderstandings about what the Law requires versus what the Law allows.
There are levels of rightness. I choose to seek the highest possible. I do not judge and certainly do not condemn those whose consciences guide them to the rightness of other levels. I do not see that torture is required, merely allowed. I choose not to support its utilization unless there is simply no other way. With Yeshua, there usually is, in my study and experience. |

Then, if necessary, just refuse to go to work starting July 4 until every elected and appointed member of the Federal Government has resigned. Instead peacefully assemble with like-minded citizens to publicly express your committment to real change. Note there is no legal method of recalling elected Federal officials. Let the governors of the states hold down the fort assisted by the remaining portions of the Federal Government until the states conduct special elections, say no later than Labor Day, followed by immediate inauguration of the winners. Incumbants would be free to run for their former positions.
The stakes are huge. This may be the only way we can avoid a disasterous confrontation between lots of heavily armed people all believing they are defending the Constitution of the United States of America. That could only benefit the true enemies of our government: those who war against freedom, liberty, and the corresponding civic responsibility that goes with it. These enemies include people who run some foreign governments, some religious groups, and some businesses. It also includes willing agents of these people. Most people in the world aren't against the Constitution. Too many people of means within the United States are, however.
If you think this idea is nuts or unnecessary, I hope you're right. But if you think this is a good idea, spread it far and wide. Print it out and post it everywhere you can. Email it to all your friends. Note it on your Facebook page. Do it while you still can.
Above all, no matter what you think, TALK about it. As I said, the stakes are huge. |

Alignment: Lawful Good characters are the epitome of all that is just and good. They believe in order and governments that work for the benefit of all, and generally do not mind doing direct work to further their beliefs.
Race: Humans are the 'average' race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live 'for the moment'.
Primary Class: Bards are the entertainers. They sing, dance, and play instruments to make other people happy, and, frequently, make money. They also tend to dabble in magic a bit.
Secondary Class: Mages harness the magical energies for their own use. Spells, spell books, and long hours in the library are their loves. While often not physically strong, their mental talents can make up for this.
Deity: Oghma is the Neutral Good god of knowledge and invention. He is also known as the Binder of What is Known, and is the Patron of Bards. His followers believe that knowledge reigns supreme, and is the basis for everything else that is done. They wear white shirts and pants, with a black and gold braided vest, and a small, box-like hat. All priests of Oghma are known as Loremasters. Oghma's symbol is a scroll.

Thursday I got a call from a contracting shop that saw my resume on Monster and wanted to know if I was available for a mainframe administration job in downtown Baltimore. "Sure," I said, knowing that as it has been more than a decade since I have administered big iron I wasn't going to be a prime candidate to their client. But the client, the City of Baltimore, liked what they saw on paper and called me in for an interview yesterday afternoon. I spent an hour with three client tech people and the company's contract manager that focused on my geeky career timeline document and impressed them with everything I have done and learned quickly. That afternoon the company called to say the client had accepted me for the position. So naturally I accepted.
I call this a miracle. I've got no business getting a position like this without supernatural grace and favor working for me. I pray that same grace enables me to (re)learn everything in record time. I'm replacing one guy who retired, and my mentor will retire in August. I need to be ready to be the guru by then. This means lots of hours hitting the books with high-powered energy drinks for fuel. But I'll be able to support my family again. |

Anyhow, I spent some time catching up on what y'all have been posting. That hasn't made me feel warm and bubbly, unfortunately. At least I know how to pray for you better.
I've been busy getting my son Joseph transitioning to life as a junior living on his own. I also have been making progress with my DAW (digital audio workstation) project, which means I'm making progress on my music projects as well. I do have a problem that seems to be in the Linux kernel or soundcard driver which manifests itself by rebooting the box. The triggers deal with the MIDI interface so I can work around it to some extent. I reported it to the Gentoo distribution bugzilla and am waiting to find out if it's my responsibility to report it upstream to kernel.org since the problem is not fixed by the bleeding edge kernel, 2.6.16-rc1. There's no reason it would since it manifests in every kernel I've tried and there are no bug reports like it. My fear is it's a hardware problem that can't be coded around--non-maskable interrupts usually indicate catastrophies. Wait and see.
Well, maybe I can get to sleep now. I'll try to be around more in the future. |

It's been a while. I didn't get that job, had another interview almost two weeks ago that they're still making up their minds about. Last week Mrs. Craig and I decided to launch a business selling Pre-Paid Legal Services memberships. We're convinced they offer a useful service to at least half the population, have no competition to speak of, and there's some serious money available including residual income to those who work smart and persistently. If this sounds interesting to you, get in touch. It's not for everyone, but it's not hard sales--low key is the ticket.
Today was Yom T'Ruach (the Day of the Blowing [of the shofar]) more popularly called Rosh HaShannah (Head of the Year, which it is not according to the Bible--something else the rabbis have gotten mixed up about). The evening and morning services at Beth Messiah were not well attended, sad to say. I guess a lot of people have trouble getting off work even though the public schools are closed. |

[Aug. 12th, 2005|06:08 pm] |
I have an interview on Monday afternoon for a UNIX administration position. I seem to have found a hiring manager who is not put off by my vast experience, advanced age, and interest in an entry level position after being out of the field for several years. This could be a very welcome open door. All prayers for an excellent discussion and desirable outcome are greatly desired. I don't feel nervous and that's probably a good sign. Getting this job would go a long way toward improving Elaine's peace of mind and thus engendering an enhanced state of the family. Being able to balance income and outgo would not be bad either.
I was looking at taking a night class at the local University of Phoenix campus to investigate finally earning an undergraduate degree. Surely my professional experience should be worth a lot of credits in an IT curriculum. However, if I get this job, I probably won't have time for a night class, as I'll be working overtime at getting up to speed for several months at least. Besides, I'd rather go to Marlboro (I think they could use a student who's older than most of the faculty!). ;) |

[Aug. 7th, 2005|06:17 am] |
Well, this story certainly offers hope to overcome the current patent madness. I'm very encouraged about this.
I have been running on empty since before the wedding and haven't really had the time to collect my thoughts until now. Mrs. Craig and the at-home boys are at the beach this week while I eke out some positive cash flow (well, reduce the negative cash flow). I thought the entire event was a tremendous beginning for the newlyweds. I was especially impressed by the support and caring of the Marlboro community. I'm glad they're remaining in the area of the College and will be involved there even though it means I'll continue to seldom see my not-so-little girl. Maybe I'll get the opportunity to try my hand at tabletop RPGing when I visit sometime down the road.
I was glad the ceremony went so well and so many people were blessed by it. Does anybody know how the tape came out? I got the opportunity to discuss religion with Elaine's cousin Marilyn and plant a seed or two as a direct consequence of performing the service. I fully recommend it to any fathers of daughters out there. :) |

I have examined Ernest carefully and believe him to be a man of Godly character who will discharge the duties and responsibilities of a husband and father in good faith, to the best of his abilities, with the help of God. This opinion is shared by Pastor Bobby Powers of the Four Square Gospel Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. Beau has submitted to directives concerning his courtship of Naomi such that they have never kissed, to the great surprise, indeed, incredulity of many. WELCOME AND THEOLOGICAL DISCOURSE
We welcome all of you who have gathered here together today to witness this wonderful event: the joining of the lives of a man and a woman together in marriage. They two together become one, maintaining their distinct personalities but merging them into a new reality, which is more than just the sum of two individuals.
Marriage itself is something that was ordained in the very beginning of the Creation of humankind. For it was in the beginning that God decreed that it was not good that man should be alone. Therefore that man would be created male and female and that the two would leave the parents that raised them and that they would become one together, in a union of fellowship, in a union of companionship, that would reflect His love for the human race and would reflect that quality of faithfulness and commitment that is truly Godly.
Marriage itself through the teaching of Scripture becomes the image of God's love for His people as well as the image by which we understand many spiritual truths. It was the joy of a wedding ceremony that was the occasion of the first great miracle of Yeshua the Messiah in which he changed water into an abundance of wine. And it is at the time of marriage that we think of the nature of love, that is not puffed up, that does not seek its own way, but that love truly seeks the other's good first--the quality of love that is patient, kind, compassionate, and indeed, never fails but lasts through all trials and all difficulties.
We gather together here today to reflect contrary to the world's ways, the ways of the Scriptures, for we seek to reflect those true values of marriage and family which are hallowed through ages of experience and find their source in the very Word of God, which we know as the Bible.
Before we return to the traditional aspects of the service which reflect those values, let me state a few notes regarding this ceremony.
I am officiating at the suggestion of the rabbi of Beth Messiah Congregation, Michael Bryan, who could not preside today, being on the West Coast. While I am not an ordained clergyman, the laws of the state of Maryland will be satisfied by the oversight of my brother Richard who is a pastor of the United Methodist Church. He will sign the marriage license.
Naomi desired a Jewish wedding, so it seemed appropriate to use the ceremony of her parents' wedding as the template. As that was presided over by Dan Juster, it is hopefully of an acceptablly sufficient level of theological soundness for most, if not all, present. That its use might constitute the establishment of a new tradition in the family was a minor consideration.
A Jewish wedding has two parts. First is the betrothal, which binds the man and woman together and commits them to the marriage. Second is the marriage proper which confers the usual benefits of the marriage covenent.
In ancient times it was the custom that the betrothal would take place, then the groom would leave his wife's town and go establish a living and a family domicile elsewhere, a process that could take several years. When all was ready, he would return for his bride and the marriage ceremony would be held. Unlike our modern equivalent, engagement, a betrothal could not simply be broken. It should be noted that Beau and Naomi understood that their marriage proposal and acceptance would be as binding as a betrothal as far as Elaine and I were concerned. Nonetheless, the formal betrothal is about to occur. It consists primarily of the sharing of a glass of wine following a special blessing for the betrothal and is followed by the vows and rings ceremonies.
The marriage proper is also primarily the sharing of a glass of wine. However, it follows seven blessings and also is followed by the breaking of the wine glass used in the betrothal ceremony to signify the end of the betrothal period and the breaking with the past the new marriage represents.
BETROTHAL CEREMONY

David: Bah ruch ah tah ah do ni ehl lo hay nu mehl ehch hah o lahm bo ray peh ree hah gah fehn.
Praised be Thou, O LORD our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Praised be Thou, O LORD our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by Thy commandments and has commanded us concerning forbidden connections and has forbidden us those who are merely betrothed but has allowed us those who are lawfully married to us through huppah and betrothal. Praised be Thou, O LORD our God, who sanctifies Thy people Israel through huppah and betrothal. Amen.
[David gives cup to Naomi who drinks and passes the cup to Beau who drinks the rest, then passes the cup to David who places it back on the table.]
VOWS:
Richard: Beau, do you of your own free will and consent take Naomi to be your wife and do you promise to love, honor, and cherish her throughout life? If so, answer yes.
Beau: Yes.
Richard: Naomi, do you of your own free will and consent take Beau to be your husband and do you promise to love, honor, and cherish him throughout your life? If so, answer yes.
Naomi: Yes.
RING CEREMONY:

David: Beau, please repeat after me:

Behold, thou art betrothed to me with this ring in accordance with the Law of Moses and Israel.
SPECIAL MUSIC JSB' Siciliana in G minor
KETUBAH READING [elided]
SHEVAH BERECHOT
[Pour second cup of wine.]
David: In Judiasm every tradition is used as an opportunity to bless the LORD our God. The theme of the marriage tradition is one of joy. I would like everyone to join with me now as we pray and to bless the LORD our God and pray joy, not into just this wedding, but into their marriage forever to come.
Blessed are you, O LORD our God, who creates such special things of joy, such as even a glass of wine. Blessed are you, O LORD our God, who creates every object and every event in this life to give glory unto You. Blessed are you, O LORD our God, who creates joy and happiness, cheerfulness and delight, love and compassion, peace and companionship. O LORD, may we soon hear the sound of joy in the streets and cities of Judea and Jerusalem, the sounds of brides and their grooms dancing and rejoicing, the sounds of young men eating and drinking and making merry. Blessed are you, O LORD our God, who makes the bridegroom to rejoice in his new bride.
Joseph: [recites Sheva Berachot in Hebrew]
[David gives cup to Naomi who drinks and passes the cup to Beau who drinks the rest, then passes the cup to David who places it back on the table.]
PRAYER
David: It is our desire at this time to pray for the bride and the groom that they might receive the strength of God to make this marriage relationship one that is truly reflective of His power and life.
Our Father and our God, our King and our Provider, we pray that you would provide Beau with strength and wisdom and understanding, that he, through the power of Your Life in the Messiah in him, might be able to walk in the ways of Scripture as pertains to his relationship to Naomi, that you would develop a love and character within Beau that will be such that Naomi will be able to look to him for leadership and wisdom in this relationship. We pray, Father, that he might be gentle in all ways in which gentleness is required and that he might be strong in every way when strength is required. That he might have that peace that he might not be threatened, that he might know that inner security that comes through knowing himself in Thee. Father, we just pray that You would make Beau a man of prayer and that through his prayers his marriage and his family would be a cohesive unit filled with Your Love and the very Presence of Your Spirit. Direct him always in thinking toward your Word. We pray in the Name of the Ma shee ahch Yeshua. Amen.
And our Father, we pray for Naomi, that you would give her the peace that passes all understanding that she might know through Yeshua Hah'Mah shee ahch that freedom from fear and anxiety and that knowledge of her security in You, that she might know that she can trust in you through all the difficulties of life and that You provide for her. That You might enable her in that calm and peace to be able to fulfill all of the responsibilities in love which are given in Scripture to the wife. Father, fill her with patience, fill her with wisdom, fill her, we pray, with your Ru ahch Hah Ko dehsh, Your Holy Spirit. Father, we just pray that she might have that spirit that will be a joy unto her husband. We charge her to see that these things are done in her life. And we charge Beau to see that his responsibilities are fulfilled as a husband. And we trust You LORD because You have begun a good work in them, that You will indeed bring unto fruition the very image of the Messiah in their lives and in their walk before You. We praise You and thank you for this time with joy. O LORD, we're so thankful that You've given us direction, purpose, and understanding in a world that has lost its direction. And that's why our joy is complete today on this wedding day for Beau and Naomi. How our hearts go out to them to pray for their strengthening and to pray that their lives might be greatly fruitful together for Your Kingdom. In Yeshua's Name, amen.
THE FIRST KISS
David: And it is now my privilege to pronounce you as husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.
BREAKING THE GLASS
The breaking of the glass. an ancient ceremony, which traditionally had to do with remembering our people, their tragedies in the fall of Jerusalem, because so great have been these tragedies that we would not let even the joy of a wedding to cause us to forget our people Israel. So the glass is broken to temper our joy. But it has also been interpreted in recent times to relate to the permanence of the marriage bond, for the state of the glass, when broken, cannot be placed in its former state. It is customary to shout "Mazel Tov" and applaud when the glass has been broken.
[David takes glass and places on the floor near Beau's feet, then Beau stomps on the glass.]
